a little more mobile

leave a comment »

So, I got a new toy a week ago. Ever since this device came out I have made fun of them, over sized ipods. But to be honest, I knew from the beginning that this may be my holy grail. I have always wanted a truly mobile computer. Since the  mid 90’s I have bought a number of handheld computers. This is the first one that I really feel is what I want.

No, it is not a replacement for my laptop. I can’t run Photoshop on it, and I don’t want to. I am also not a fan of the app store. So much crap that should be free. I guess I have spent too much time with Linux.

So, wait. My big machine is Win 7, my netbook is Ubuntu and my tablet is iOS.

Okay, onto the picture. Just a crop and some adjustments in ACR.

I set the white balance off the keys on the keyboard, plus a few other adjustments.

Oh, and again with the original.

Something About Racing

leave a comment »

Here is something about me you might not know, I love Formula 1 racing. I enjoy rally races, road races, TTs. Really just about everything except circle track and to a lesser extent drag racing. So, yeah, no NASCAR or Indy. I just find circle track boring.

Ah, but F1. That is something I will awake at 2am to watch. Lately I haven’t had to get up early. Fox has been carrying the race. It is tape delayed so they can butcher it and spread out to 2 hours with a crap load of commercials.

You might get the feeling I do not a fan of Fox. I am not. They bought Speedvision a number of years ago and basically turned it into NASCAR Tv. No more rallies, no more road racing and F1 got very hard to find. No more reruns of F1.

This year they have decided to place 4 races on Fox. I guess this is good. More exposure to the American populous. Maybe more American fans. Maybe that F1 track in Texas will happen. We only have two races on this side of the world, Canada and Brazil.

F1 is the pinnacle of auto racing. It is a shame we do not have a track, team or driver. I would love to see Ford step up. I can always dream.

Spaghetti Sandwich

leave a comment »

I love Spaghetti, I eat it at least once a month. Really, it is good stuff. I would say my spaghetti is not like yours. I am not trying to be elitist or anything, but long ago I gave up on bottled spaghetti sauce and spice packets. I also gave up on ground beef too. It is too bland. I use Italian Sausage.  If I was crazy I would use fresh tomatoes too, but I never have that much time. You see, time is always a factor and that is where the Spaghetti Sandwich came from. It takes at least 20 minutes to cook pasta, 2 minutes to make toast.  Read the rest of this entry »

Its Getting Closer

Cool news from Sony today, it’s been all over the tech news on the web. They have created an OLED screen thinner then the thickness of a human hair that is also flexible enough to be rolled over a cylinder.

Now, this is new and not ready for production but think of what this could do. With some advancements in battery technology you could have your iPad turned into an iRoll. Sure, Steve Jobs will have his minions come up with something clever that starts with iP but I guess I am not clever enough.

But still, anyone remember 10 years ago with a called show Earth: Final Conflict. 4 good seasons one bad. Never mind that, they had one cool cell phone. I know this will never come out, people want games and what not. Along with smallerand sleeker. But for video conferencing on the go this would be cool.

More info at Sony

Fun with Google Translate

Okay, web based translations have been around for a long time, so has this game. Take a sentence and translate to a different language, then another and another a few more times then back to English ( or original language)

Here is one from English to Japanese, back and forth.

New Lens

leave a comment »

Well, it is my Birthday, I did just get laid off but my final check came with a nice bonus. (They really want me back if the they survive) I decided on a budget of $550, no more. That gave me the choice of a few lenses. I wanted a fast lens, f2.8 or faster. I was really looking at the Canon 85 f1.8. It is a great lens but a bit limited.

I really want a nice zoom. So looking at what is available we have:

  • Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 at $450
  • Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 at $420
  • Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 at $420
  • Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 at $350
  • Sigma 50-150mm f2.8 at errr, nevermind it’s $750

Canon wants around a grand for a lens in that range (ouch). Used lenses were nowhere to found locally. So, I went with the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8!

So far I am really liking this lens. It is very close in range to my Canon kit lens (EFs 18-55mm IS f3.5-5.6) but the build and image quality seem much nicer.

Want a new lens

leave a comment »

The last week I have been bugging for a new lens. The lens I buy will be the last one for some time. Which lens, I haven’t made my mind yet. Here are my thoughts.

Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 : I can use a wider lens, currently my best is a Canon EF 20-30 f/3.5-4.5 USM. Still the Canon lens is pretty nice. I’m not too sure if the Tamron is worth it. It is giving me more range.

Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM : The Canon EF 20-30mm gives me a 30mm focal length but at f/4.5. The Sigma is nice, soft on the edges but very sharp in the center. It does not extend my range. On a side note, it will not for a Full Frame camera.

Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM : An awesome lens, maybe the sharpest non-L lens made by Canon. 8 blades on the aperture so it has creamy smooth bokeh.

Tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro : A very sharp macro it goes head to head with the Canon 85 f1.8 except it is one stop slower and does not have USM but it does come with a hood.

One of the reasons for wanting a new lens is that I am looking to start doing portraits. The Tamron 10-24, I guess it wont help me much. The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 would be a very nice portrait lens along with the Canon 85mm f/1.8. The Tamron 90mm macro is a bit slow both in AF and Aperture.

I have about $500 to spend, which means all of the lenses are in my price range. I am seriously leaning towards the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM.

We will see this next weekend.
